General InformationWhat is Safari Books Online?
Safari Books Online offers electronic reference libraries for programming, IT, and business professionals. Unlike an online bookstore, with
Safari Books Online you can search the electronic versions of books
from leading publishers simultaneously.
You can search the entire library in a
matter of seconds to pinpoint precisely the piece of
information you need.. Safari's Additional Reading section on the book catalog and
content pages will let you know of related material elsewhere
in the repository. Safari Books Online is available via a Web browser from any computer
anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
No add-on software is required to run Safari, though your browser must be
configured to allow for JavaScript to be run and grant us the right to store
a session cookie on your workstation.
Which publishers/imprints are available in Safari Books Online? Safari delivers an exclusive collection of complete and fully searchable books,
articles, and videos from the premier industry publishers. Our publishers include
O'Reilly Media, Addison-Wesley, Adobe Press, Macromedia Press, lynda.com, Cisco
Press, Wharton School Publishing, Financial Times, No Starch, Muska & Lipman, New
Riders, Que, Sams, Prima, Premier, SitePoint, Alpha, Syngress, Sun Microsystems Press,
Microsoft Press, IBM Press, IBM Redbooks, IBM Developer Works, MySQL Press, Thomson
Course Technology, Thomson Crisp Learning, Peachpit Press, SAS Publishing, Prentice Hall, and more. With Safari's Rough Cuts books program, you may often find early versions
of books on the service well before they're available at your local bookstore.
Safari also has programs that will allow you to have complimentary online
access to certain books when you purchase print editions. See the Contact Us page for details on how to
contact Safari's publishers.
How many books are in Safari Books Online? Safari contains thousands of technical and business books.
To find the number of books included in your Safari subscription,
select View All Titles under Browse by Category on the home page.
How often are new titles added? Typically, between 75 and 100 new titles are added to Safari Books
Online each month. We indicate in the user interface when a newer
edition of a book becomes available, so you can easily keep your
electronic bookshelf up to date. The Safari Rough Cuts program allows
you to purchase access to titles before they are available in print form. How can I find books recently added to Safari Books Online? A roster of books recently added to the service, in addition to the most
popular titles on the service, is available on the home page.
To see a complete listing of the new titles, click on the
New Books link located on the home page. Where can I find complete information about a particular book? Each book in the service has a "catalog" page, which can be
accessed at any time by clicking on the book's title or cover.
The catalog page provides bibliographic information about the book,
an abstract, Amazon user reviews about the title, and material on
Safari related to the book.
How does Safari determine which books to add to the service?
Why aren't all books from a particular publisher available in
Safari Books Online? There are a number of ways a book can appear in Safari. Generally,
a Safari publisher makes an editorial decision to place a book on the service.
Also: - Safari may make arrangements with a publisher to add a specific set of
books to the service. This is often done to "fill out" subject
areas that deal with emerging technology
- Users often request we add books on a particular subject.
Safari then indicates to its publishers that its users have an interest
in a particular topic. We encourage you to let us know if there are
subjects you'd like to see us cover more thoroughly
- Safari tracks Amazon best sellers and Nielsen Bookscan.
If a bestseller is published by one of Safari's publishers but not
yet in the service, we request that it be added
- Pre-print release versions of books may be made available via the
Safari Rough Cuts program. When the printed version of a book becomes
available, it moves into the general population of Safari titles.
Please note that given the constantly changing technology and publication
schedules faced by our publishers, we are unable to provide listings of
books planned to be included in the service. Can I request a specific title? If there are specific titles you are interested in from our participating publishers, contact us and we'll pass your request along to them. You may also want to contact the publisher directly. See the Contact Us page for details on communicating with our publishers. Note that given the vagaries of the book publishing business, we cannot guarantee a specific date when a book will be added to the service.
Does a book in Safari Books Online contain the full content of the
printed book? Yes. Safari contains the full cover-to-cover text -- just like a
printed book. Tables, graphics and diagrams are presented in line with text,
just as they appear in the printed books. In order to view the full content
of any book, you must first place it on My Bookshelf. Most Safari titles
are formatted to optimize presentation in a Web browser. However, there
are a number of books where it would not be possible for us to maintain
all the content were we to do so. For these "print fidelity"
books, we display a representation of the printed page in Safari.
All search capabilities are available for these types of books.
Where can I find examples and CD content? Code samples and CD content are supplied by the publisher.
When a publisher chooses to make this information available, you will
find links to examples on the book's Safari catalog page (the page
displayed when you click on a book's cover or title).
The means by which you download supplemental material varies
depending on the amount of information available. In some cases, CD content has not been made available by publishers.
Where can I ask technical questions related to the content of a book? Safari does not provide support regarding questions related to the
actual content of a specific book. This type of support is done by the
book publisher. Safari will be happy to assist you if you find an error
in the formatting or presentation of book content, but you'll need to contact
the publisher if you have a question about the text itself. See the
Contact Us page for details on how to
contact the publishers. Which browsers are compatible with Safari? Safari Books Online makes use of AJAX technology to ensure the security
of its content. In order to access the service, you must be using one of
the following browsers: - Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 and above and browsers based on it (Mac OS versions are not supported)
- Gecko-based browsers such as Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, SeaMonkey, Epiphany, Galeon and Netscape version 7.1 and above
- Browsers implementing the KHTML API version 3.2 and above, including Konqueror version 3.2 and above and Apple Safari version 1.2 and above
- Opera browsers version 8.0 and above
- iCab version 3.0b352 and above
Is Safari Books Online available in languages other than English? At this time, Safari is available only in English.
Is there an RSS feed to Safari content? Yes. There are actually several ways to use RSS to stay on top of the
latest Safari additions: - To find out when a new title is added to the Safari library, click on the RSS icon displayed on the home page
- To generate an RSS feed when titles are added in a specific category, click on the category name from any Safari page. From the resulting category listing, you can click on the RSS feed icon.
- You can create your own customized RSS feed to let you know when specific books are added to the service. Click on the Tools menu located at the top of the screen, then enter the information you'd like to have in your feed in the RSS Generator section of the Tools page.
May I purchase print versions of Safari books? Yes.
Go to the catalog page of the book you would like to purchase by
clicking on its cover or title. You'll see a button you can press to
begin the process of purchasing the book directly from the publisher.
Note that Safari Max and Safari Library users receive special discounts off the list
price of titles.
Questions regarding the purchase of print versions of
Safari books should be directed to the publisher using the instructions
displayed on the print book purchase page.
Does Safari have an alternate accessible 508 compliant interface?
Safari Books Online conducted a review of its web-based product to
determine compatibility with ADA Section 508 guidelines. Safari Books
Online offers a specific portal whereby users can access the same
library of content with our 508-compliant features. For access to this
portal, users are asked to email
customer-service@safaribooksonline.com
or call 800-775-7330.
Subscriptions
How does a Safari Books Online subscription work? In order to access the full content of a Safari book, you need to do two
things: - Have a Safari subscription
- Place a book you want to read on your electronic bookshelf -- My
Bookshelf
Safari subscriptions are available in a variety of forms: - You may open a subscription that will allow you to access the service but not have the ability to
download PDFs of book content -- Safari Basic. Subscriptions are sold on either a monthly or annual basis
with bookshelf sizes ranging from five to 30 slots. With bookshelf subscriptions, books must be placed on
your bookshelf in order to read them. Once placed on the bookshelf, a book must remain there for 30 days.
Most Safari titles take one slot on your bookshelf, but they may range from zero to 3 slots.
- We offer Safari Max subscriptions, similar to Safari Basic but offering you the ability to download
chapters of our books in PDF format. Each month, you'll receive an allocation of five download tokens;
additional download tokens may be purchased as well. Safari Max subscriptions also give you discounts
on print book purchases made through Safari. Safari Max subscriptions are available with 10, 20, or 30 bookshelf slots. Tokens remain available to you for 90 days from the date they are granted to you or their purchase date.
- Safari Library subscriptions are our premium offering. With Safari Library, you can access all
our books whenever you want with no limitations. As with Safari Max, you have the ability to download chapters
of our books in PDF format, and you receive an allocation of five download tokens per month; additional download tokens
may be purchased. You can also view Rough Cuts titles online at no extra cost. (Downloading Rough Cuts books or purchasing
the print version requires an additional transaction.) The How To database (Beta) and Video content are also part of the Safari Library subscription.
- You are welcome to open a Safari promotional account, which will give you access to our books for a limited period of time. At the conclusion of the promotional period, your account will automatically be converted to the type of subscription that you chose to try (though you're free to cancel at any time during the promotional period with no obligation).
- You may also open a Safari subscription to individual titles by entering a coupon number.
Some of our publishers
will grant you access for a period of time to the electronic version of a book when you purchase the print
edition. At the conclusion of your complimentary book access period, you may convert your account
to a Safari Bookshelf or Safari Library subscription.
- Access to books not yet available in bookstores is available via our Rough Cuts program. You're
given the opportunity to subscribe to a Rough Cuts book in conjunction with a Safari subscription, subscribe to only the
Rough Cuts title, or purchase print versions of Rough Cuts books that will soon be available at bookstores.
You may start a Safari subscription directly though
us at
http://my.safaribooksonline.com or through one of our partners: Safari's Pearson imprint partners (Que, Sams, Addison-Wesley, for example)
also have links on their sites where you can start a Safari subscription.
How many books can I have on My Bookshelf? When you purchase a Safari Max subscription, you choose a 10-, 20-, or 30-slot bookshelf. When you purchase a
Safari Basic subscription, you can select a five-, 10-, 20-, or 30-slot bookshelf. In either case, you pay a flat
monthly or annual fee, by credit card, based on the size of your bookshelf. You can add books to My Bookshelf
until all the slots have been filled. Then, you can modify your subscription
through swapping: A book must reside on your bookshelf for 30 days.
You can then either leave it on your bookshelf or replace it with another
title of interest to you. Your monthly or annual fee will not change
depending on the number of books on your bookshelf. If you are a Safari Library subscriber, there is no limit to the number of books you can have in My Favorites. For additional information, see the section titled Adding Books to
My Bookshelf.
What are "slots" on My Bookshelf? Safari individual subscriptions are based on the size of the
bookshelf your purchase, not the number of books they contain.
The price of your Safari subscription depends on the number of slots you
choose to have available to you. Most Safari books take one slot on your
bookshelf, though slot values can range from one-half to three slots.
Slot values are based on the retail price of the print version of a book.
To determine the number of slots a book will take on your bookshelf,
click on its catalog page. You will always be asked to confirm the addition
or removal of a book from your bookshelf. For additional information, see the section titled Adding Books to
My Bookshelf. How often am I billed? You will be billed either monthly or annually, depending on the
subscription plan you have chosen. Payment must be made using either
Visa, EuroCard/MasterCard, or American Express. Your account will be
automatically rebilled until you cancel your subscription. Depending on the credit card you use for your Safari subscription,
your billing statement will indicate either Safari Books Online or
Bibit Global Payment Services.
Does Safari Offer group, corporate, library or academic accounts? Safari offers three services to enterprises, associations,
libraries and universities: - Tech Books, the premier electronic reference library for enterprise
programming and IT departments. The contents of this library are the
same as those offered to individual subscribers
- Business Books, a collection of more than 1,000 books of interest
to managers and business professionals
- HelpDesk, a virtual help desk for non-technical managers and
office workers.
For additional information about our corporate offerings,
visit
http://www.safaribooksonline.com or click on the Corporate Licenses
link on the home page.
Can I share my Safari subscription with somebody else? Safari subscriptions are for individual use only and are
non-transferable. For group pricing and more information on
setting up a trial for your enterprise, go to
http://www.safaribooksonline.com
or click on the Corporate Licenses link on the home page.
Safari Library SubscriptionWhat is Safari Library?
Safari Library gives you unlimited access to every book in the Safari
Bookshelf collection. You can read any book online whenever you want,
and place books that you want to refer to later into your My Favorites
list for convenience. In addition, you can read Rough Cuts online
(downloading chapters or purchasing the print version requires a
payment.) The How To database (Beta) and Video content are also part of the Safari Library subscription. How is it different from a bookshelf subscription?
With Safari Library, there's no requirement to place a book on a
bookshelf in order to read it and no limitations on the number of books
that you can read, and no requirement to keep a book on your bookshelf
for at least 30 days. In fact, the bookshelf has been replaced with My
Favorites, a list onto which you can place books for convenience. You
can put as many books as you want onto your My Favorites list, and add
or remove books whenever you want.
A Safari Library subscription also includes premium content and features not available in a bookshelf subscription.
- Rough Cuts: With Safari Library, you can read any Rough Cut book online without purchasing it. (Downloading chapters or purchasing the print version still requires a payment.)
- Video: Access to hours of instructional video is part of the Safari Library subscription.
- How To: The How To database (Beta) is a premium component that enables you to locate tutorial content within books quickly and easily, rate it and review it, and print or manage it in custom folders.
How do I sign up for Safari Library?
Click on one of the "Try Safari Now!" links you'll see all over Safari,
or click the "Subscribe Now!" link in the right-hand column when you
see it. Follow the instructions, and in a few minutes you'll be using
Safari. Why should I upgrade from a bookshelf to Safari Library? If you've ever run out of slots in your bookshelf, or have been
frustrated by the requirement to keep books on your bookshelf for at
least 30 days, you should consider upgrading to Safari Library. With
Safari Library, you can read an unlimited number of books whenever you
want. There's no need to keep books on your bookshelf for at least 30
days; in fact, your bookshelf is gone. We've replaced it with My
Favorites, a list where you can keep your favorite books. You can add
books to and delete books from My Favorites whenever you want.
Also, with Safari Library, you can read any Rough Cut book online
without purchasing it. (Downloading chapters or purchasing the print
version still requires a payment.) You can view instructional video on a large variety of topics and applications. The How To database (Beta) will help you locate specific procedures and solutions.
Signup and PricingHow do I sign up for a subscription? Subscribing to Safari is easy. Just click on the Subscribe Now! link
displayed in the login area of the home page. How much does a subscription to Safari cost? A subscription to Safari
Library costs USD $42.99 per month or $472.99 per year. With Safari Library, you can: - Search the entire library. Read any book cover to cover whenever you want.
- Add books to or remove books from your My Favorites list whenever you want.
- Read any Rough Cuts book online (downloading the book or purchasing the print version requires a separate transaction.)
- View video content.
- Locate specific answers using the How To database (Beta). Rate and review your favorite How Tos. Store your favorite How Tos in custom folders.
- Automatically receive five chapter download tokens per month.
In the vast majority of cases, one download token allows you to
download one chapter onto your desktop for your personal use.
Just as the retail price of a print book varies, there are occasions
where the publisher will require more than one token to download a
specific chapter.
- Purchase additional download tokens for only USD $10 per five-pack
- Save up to 35% on print books - Safari Subscribers receive a discount of up to 35% on select publishers' print books.
A subscription to Safari Max costs USD $22.99 per month for a 10-slot
bookshelf. As a Safari Max subscriber, you get all the benefits of
Safari Basic, plus the ability to download PDF versions of most
book chapters. With Safari Max, you can: - Search the entire library. Add books to My Bookshelf to read them
cover to cover.
- Swap old books for new books as your needs change.
The only rule is that a book must stay on My Bookshelf for
at least 30 days.
A subscription to Safari Basic starts for as little as USD $9.99 per
month for a five-slot subscription. With Safari Basic you get all
the search functionality of Safari but without chapter download
or print book discounts. What types of payment does Safari accept? Safari accepts only credit card payments for individual accounts.
Visa, EuroCard/MasterCard, and American Express may be used. My country isn't listed on the subscription page. What do I do? Safari is unable to accept subscriptions from certain countries,
due to a high incidence of credit card fraud from these areas or
because of national security restrictions. We apologize for the
inconvenience. During sign-up I received the message that my email address and/or
credit card is already in use. What do I do? If your email address is already in use, the service is detecting
that you have previously had a Safari account using that email address.
For information on how to reactivate your account,
click
here.
BillingWhen will I be billed? For monthly subscriptions, your credit card is charged on the day you
sign up for Safari and covers one month of service.
For example, if you buy a 10-slot subscription on January 15,
your charge, effective January 15, covers your first month of access.
Thereafter, your credit card is charged on the 15th day of each month. Annual subscriptions are similar, but you'll be charged for a year's
worth of service with no additional billing for 12 months.
At the end of the 12th month, you will be sent an email confirming
that your annual account has been renewed. Please note that Safari does not offer refunds for unused time for
either monthly or annual subscriptions. How do I find my next billing date? To find your next billing date, look under the Subscription Management
section of the My Account page. The latest billing of my credit card failed. What should I do? Safari will attempt to bill your credit card a second time.
If you have received the first notification of billing failure,
login to Safari and update your credit card information
(see How do I change my credit card information?)
If we are unable to bill your credit card after two tries,
access to your account will be barred.
If this occurs, contact Safari customer support to resolve
your billing issue. What is VAT? Value Added Tax (VAT) is a general consumption tax assessed on the
value added to goods and services. It is a general tax that applies,
in principle, to all commercial activities involving the production
and distribution of goods and the provision of services.
It is a consumption tax because it is borne ultimately by the
final consumer. It is not a charge on companies.
It is charged as a percentage of price, which means that the
actual tax burden is visible at each state in the production
and distribution chain. It is collected fractionally, via a system
of deductions whereby taxable persons (i.e., VAT-registered businesses)
can deduct from their VAT liability the amount of tax they have paid
to other taxable persons on purchases for their business activities.
This mechanism ensures that the tax is neutral regardless of how many
transactions are involved. For additional information,
click
here.
I have a VAT exemption number. How do I use it? To claim VAT exemption using your VAT number, enter your VAT number
in the Name and Billing Address section of the My Account page.
When we receive a valid number, you'll no longer be charged VAT
when your account is renewed. Please note that the VAT number must
start with the two-letter country code. Must Safari charge VAT? Aren't books excluded from VAT? Note that Safari is an electronic reference service and as such does
not qualify for possible exclusions related to printed books.
Account Management and InformationHow do I upgrade my subscription? There are four types of upgrades: - Upgrade from a monthly to an annual subscription
- Upgrade from a bookshelf subscription to Safari Library
- Increase the number of slots in your bookshelf
- Upgrade from Safari Basic to Safari Max
If
you want unlimited access to all the books in Safari's library whenever
you want, including the ability to view Rough Cuts titles online at no
extra cost, view video, and use the How To database (Beta), you can upgrade from a Safari Basic or Safari Max
subscription to Safari Library. To do so, click on the Upgrade/Downgrade Your Safari
Subscription link found on the My Account page.
There may be times when you would like to add books to your bookshelf
but you do not have any slots available. For example, if you've already
filled all 20 slots on a 20-slot bookshelf and then attempt to add a
book worth one slot, Safari will invite you to swap out a book that is
already on My Bookshelf or to upgrade to a new subscription level.
You can choose to upgrade to the next level or any higher level.
Safari then asks you to confirm this choice. When you click OK,
you agree to adjust your next billing cycle to the new, higher rate.
After Safari successfully bills your account for the pro-rated cost
of the increase, you will immediately be granted access to your larger
bookshelf. Your original billing date will remain the same. You may also upgrade your subscription from Safari Basic to Safari Max
at any time. To do so, click on the Upgrade/Downgrade Your Safari
Subscription link found on the My Account page. How does pro-rating work when I upgrade my subscription? When you upgrade an account to Safari Library, increase the number of slots in your bookshelf, or convert from a
Safari Basic to Safari Max subscription, Safari determines the amount
of credit remaining on your current subscription and applies this amount
to the cost of the upgrade. Your original billing date will stay the same. How do I downgrade my subscription? To downgrade your subscription level, go to your My Account page.
Select Upgrade/Downgrade Your Safari
Subscription. Then, select the new subscription level and enter your
current password to confirm the change. If necessary, you will need to
remove enough books from your bookshelf to drop to (or below) the new
subscription level you have selected. (If you are downgrading from a
Safari Library subscription to either Safari Max or Safari Basic, the
books in your My Favorites list will not be transferred to your new
bookshelf. If you are downgrading from Safari Library or Safari Max to Safari Basic, any unused
download tokens in your account will be forfeited.
You will retain any downloads you have purchased from Safari. The new lower billing will take effect at the start of your next
billing cycle. Safari does not offer refunds for any unused time,
slots or download tokens. Safari cannot re-issue lost downloads. How do I cancel my subscription? You may cancel your subscription at any time via the Cancel Subscription
link on the My Account page. We are unable to issue cash or credit
refunds to customers who cancel their accounts. Thus, you will continue
to have access to Safari through the end of your current billing period.
This applies to both monthly and annual Safari subscriptions. How does pro-rating work when I downgrade or cancel my subscription? Safari is unable to offer refunds for the unused time or tokens
associated with your account if you cancel. In the case of downgrades,
your existing service will be retained until the next billing cycle. How do I reactivate my account after being cancelled or if my
credit card could not be billed? Simply re-sign on to Safari using your existing login credentials.
You will be prompted to enter your name, address and billing information.
We will then bill your account and set your billing date to be the day
you reactivated.
How do I make changes to My Account information? To change your name: - Go to My Account
- Enter your current password at the bottom of the page (for confirmation of the change)
- Enter your new information
- Select the Update My Account button
Note that your email address is your Safari login ID.
If you change your email address and update it via My Account, you'll need to subsequently sign
on to Safari using the new ID. To change your password: - Go to My Account
- Click the Change Password link
- Fill in the Enter New Password field and Re-Enter it for confirmation
- Select the Update My Account button.
How do I use the My Safari page? You can access the following personalized functions from the
My Safari page: - My Bookshelf/My Favorites: A list of the titles you have added to My Bookshelf (or, with Safari Library, My Favorites.)
- My Recent Pages: A list of sections that you have accessed and read most recently, with the option to return to those sections.
- My Recent Searches: A list of your most recent searches.
- My
Bookmarks: A list of bookmarks made using the Add Bookmark link on
Safari pages. Unlike browser bookmarks, these are sever-based and
available from any browser. To remove bookmarks, select the Remove icon.
- My Notes: A list of private notes added using the Add Notes link on Safari pages. These notes are accessible only by you.
If you have Safari Library or Safari Max subscription, which gives you the capability of downloading
chapters in PDF form, an additional pane titled My Downloads will also
be displayed.
Promotional Accounts and Subscription Price DiscountsWhat sort of promotions does Safari offer? Safari offers three kinds of promotions: - Complimentary Access. These promotions, available via the
home page of any Safari portal, allow you to try a Safari subscription,
for a limited period of time (for example, 10 days.) Like paid
accounts, you are free to try out all the features of the service (with some exceptions.) At
the conclusion of the trial period, your account will be automatically
converted to a paid subscription.
- Complimentary Book Access. In conjunction with our Pearson and
O'Reilly publisher partners, we'll grant you access to the electronic
versions of print books you purchase at your local bookstore.
When you purchase the print version of a book, you'll be provided
with a coupon number you can use to add complimentary access
to a book to an existing Safari account or create a new promo
account. If you would like to take advantage of all the books in
the collection (or at the conclusion of your complimentary access
period), you'll be asked to convert your promotional account into
a paid subscription.
- Subscription Price Discounts. From time to time, we offer discounts
on paid Safari subscriptions.
I am trying to subscribe to a promotion and receive
the error "email address already in database" or "This
credit card number is already in use." Your email address and/or credit card is already in Safari.
Previous Safari subscribers and promotional account users are not eligible
to take advantage of more than one promotion. If you would like to
restart your subscription, simply sign on to the service using the
same login credentials you used with your previous Safari account.
Safari will then walk you through the steps of establishing a paid
subscription. If you previously had an account with us through your company and
would like to start an individual subscription using the same login
credentials, please contact our customer service team. Where can I find the date on which my promotional account converts
to a paid account? This day can be found in the welcome email you received and also
in the Subscription Management section of the My Account page. I have signed up for a Safari promotion before.
Can I sign up for another? No. A promotional account is available to you only once.
If you cancelled your promotion prior to its conversion to a paid
account, you can re-establish service with us by simply signing in
to Safari using the same login credentials you had during your promotional
period. It is possible, however, to take advantage of complimentary book
access coupons simultaneously. Can I upgrade/downgrade my promotional account?
Can I start my paid subscription at a different level? To upgrade or downgrade, the account must be manually converted
to a paid account first. To do so, go to My Account and select the
Upgrade/Downgrade Subscription link.
You can then immediately change your account subscription level
or change it to an annual account, or both. Why can't I view Rough Cuts books during a Safari Library promotion? Rough Cuts access normally requires a separate transaction and
additional payment, but the ability to view Rough Cuts books is
included in a paid Safari Library account. Once your promotional
account is converted to a paid Safari Library account, you'll be able to view Rough
Cuts titles. Why is a credit card required for Safari promotions? In order to minimize fraudulent use of Safari, we ask that you provide
us with a valid credit card number when establishing a promotional account
with us. Why didn't I get a welcome email when I signed up for a promotion? Assuming you provided us a valid email address as your login name,
Safari's initial email to you may be caught by spam filters.
Please be sure your email software allows messages from
customer-service@safaribooksonline.com. How do I cancel my promotional account? Unless you cancel a promotional account that gives you access to
all the titles in the Safari database for a certain number of days,
it will be automatically converted to a paid subscription.
To cancel these types of promotional accounts, click on the
Cancel Your Safari Subscription link displayed on the My Account page. Promotional accounts granting you access for a limited time
to the print versions of books you've purchased need not be
cancelled; your account will not automatically convert to a
paid subscription at the conclusion of the complimentary
book access period. How do I convert my promotional account to a monthly or annual paid
subscription? If you would like to convert your promotional account into a paid
monthly or annual subscription prior to the conclusion of your
promotional period, click on the Upgrade/Downgrade Subscription link displayed on the My Account page. Can I download chapters during my trial period? In most cases, promotional users are granted one download token to
use during the promotional period. If you would like to download more chapters during the promotional
period, you must convert your promotional account into a paid subscription.
Go to your My Account page and click on the Upgrade/Downgrade Subscription link. To be able to download additional chapters,
you will need to convert the account into a Safari Library or Safari Max paid account.
Logging InI forgot my user name
and/or password. What do I do? Your user name/login is your email address.
If you forgot your password, use the Forgot Password? link in the
login box on the home page of Safari. We'll send you a new password
to the email address you use as your Safari ID.
Must my login be my email address? Yes. Even if you opt out of receiving marketing messages from us,
we still need to communicate with you occasionally about your account.
Safari uses your login name/email address as the address where we can
contact you. I'm getting
the message "Safari cannot authenticate your user name
and/or password." What should I do? Your user name/login is your email address.
If you forgot your password, use the Forgot Password? link in the
login box on the Safari home page. Be sure to sign on to Safari from the URL you used to establish
your account
(http://my.safaribooksonline.com,
http://safari.oreilly.com or
http://safari.informit.com).
My company or school has a Safari corporate or academic account.
May I still log in to my personal account? In addition to individual subscriptions, Safari is also sold to
companies and academic institutions. You should have no problems signing
on to your individual subscription when working at the office or school: - If your company has a corporate or academic subscription to Safari, simply point
your browser to the same URL you use to access the service from your personal
account. Sign on to Safari using your personal login name and password.
- If you are accessing Safari from an academic institution that automatically
grants access to Safari without requiring users to enter a user ID or password,
you'll need to first click the Logout link displayed at the top of the screen.
Then, point your browser to the same URL you use to access the service
from your personal account. Sign on to Safari using your personal login name
and password.
May I sign on at more than one workstation at a time? No. If you attempt to sign on to Safari at more than one workstation,
your session will be closed on the original computer where you signed on
to the service.
I cannot stay logged in using Apple's Safari Web browser.
What should I do? Try logging out of Safari Books Online in the Safari Web browser. Close all browser windows, then delete
all Safari Books Online related cookies. Open a new browser window and log in
to Safari Books Online again. This problem seems to be related to release differences in
how the Apple Safari browser treats cookies, in essence making the old cookie
unreadable.
My Bookshelf
What is the purpose of My Bookshelf? Unless you are a Safari Library subscriber, in order to access the full content of a Safari book, you must first place
it on your electronic bookshelf -- My Bookshelf. Unless you do, book content
is displayed only in preview mode. The number of books you may place on
My Bookshelf is determined by the number of slots in your subscription:
five (available with Safari Basic only), 10, 20, or 30. Most Safari books
will take one slot on your bookshelf though the number of slots may vary
between zero and three. Books for which you have been granted complimentary access -- usually
by entering a coupon number -- will take no space on My Bookshelf.
The time for which you are granted free access to these titles
is generally limited, however. At the conclusion of the complimentary
access period, you'll be given the option of retaining the book on
your bookshelf or removing it.
How long must a book remain on My Bookshelf? A book must stay on your electronic bookshelf for at least 30 days.
After that time, you're free to remove it from your bookshelf and replace
it with another title.
How do I add books to My Bookshelf? Books must be placed on your My Bookshelf in order to have their
full content available. In order to be able to add a book to your
bookshelf, you must be logged in to the service. Once you are logged in, there are four ways to add a title to
My Bookshelf: - When viewing search results in View by Book mode. If a book is not
already on My Bookshelf, you will see an Add button in the Bookshelf column.
Click on this button to add the title to My Bookshelf.
- When reading a book's catalog page. Click on a book's cover or title
and you will be taken to its catalog page, a brief description of the book
and other information you may find of use. If the book is not already on
My Bookshelf, you will see a button titled Add to My Bookshelf.
- Add a book in Browse by Category mode. All Safari Books Online
titles are placed into at least one category (though some books may
appear in up to four categories). You can view the books in a category
by going to the left sidebar and selecting a category under the Browse
by Category tab. The main categories, such as Certification or Programming,
have subcategories you can click on to find books of specific interest.
If a book in one of these listings is not on My Bookshelf, the column
named Bookshelf will have a button labeled Add. If a book is already on
My Bookshelf, the entry will read On Bookshelf. To add a book, click on
the Add button.
- From within the text of a book. If you're reading a book that is
not on your bookshelf, it will appear in preview mode. You'll see the
first few paragraphs of text in a section. In order to view the entire content, you'll need to add it to to My Bookshelf. Click on the Add to My Bookshelf button to do so.
Regardless of the method you use to add a title to your bookshelf,
you will always see a series of screens asking you to confirm the addition.
After you add the title to your bookshelf, you'll be returned to the page
where you started the operation. I don't see an Add button to add books to My Bookshelf If you do not see the Add button or Add to My Bookshelf button, ensure
you are logged in to Safari. Confirm this by going to My Safari.
If you find you are not logged in, select Logout and login using
your account's credentials. My Bookshelf shows fewer books than total slots but I cannot add books.
What's wrong? Safari subscriptions are based on a total number of slots used, not
the total number of books on My Bookshelf. The majority of books in Safari
take one slot. However, some take 1/2 slot, two slots or three slots.
Slot values are a factor of the retail price of the print book.
Click on My bookshelf to view the slot values of the books on My Bookshelf.
Or, to determine the slot value of a book not on My Bookshelf, click on
the book cover. You will always be told the slot value of a book before
you confirm the addition of a book to My Bookshelf. If I own a print version of a book, can I add it to My Bookshelf
without using any slots? There are a number of "Safari-enabled" books available at your
local bookstore that include coupon numbers that will allow you to add them
to your bookshelf and have full access for a limited period of time.
In the event the book you have does not have an associated complimentary
access period, you will need to add the title to your bookshelf normally;
it will take the appropriate number of slots. How do I remove books from My Bookshelf? Each book must stay on My Bookshelf for 30 days.
On or after the 30-day mark, a book can be removed from My Bookshelf.
Once a book has been removed from My Bookshelf, the slots are free
for you to add new books. Click on the My Bookshelf tab to see when
books are eligible for swapping. To remove a book, click on the
Remove button.
My Favorites
What is the purpose of My Favorites? For Safari Library
subscribers, My Favorites is a list of the books that you often use or
want to get access to quickly. It's provided for your convenience;
books can be read without being placed in your My Favorites list.
How long must a book remain in My Favorites? Safari Library subscribers can add books to and delete books from their My Favorites list at any time.
How do I add books to My Favorites? In order to be able to add a book to My Favorites, you must be logged on to the service. Once you are logged on, there are three ways to add a title to
My Favorites: - When viewing search results in View by Book mode. If a book is not
already in your My Favorites list, you will see an Add button in the Favorites column.
Click on this button to add the title to My Favorites.
- When reading a book's catalog page. Click on a book's cover or title
and you will be taken to its catalog page, a brief description of the book,
and other information you may find of use. If the book is not already in your
My Favorites list, you will see a button titled Add to My Favorites.
If a book in one of these listings is not in your My Favorites list, the column
named Favorites will have a button labeled Add. If a book is already in
My Favorites, the entry will read In Favorites. To add a book, click on
the Add button.
Regardless of the method you use to add a title to your My Favorites list,
you will always see a series of screens asking you to confirm the addition.
After you add the title to My Favorites, you'll be returned to the page
where you started the operation. I don't see an Add button to add books to My Favorites. If you do not see the Add button or Add to My Favorites button, ensure
you are logged in to Safari. Confirm this by going to My Safari.
If you find you are not logged in, select Logout and login using
your account's credentials. How do I remove books from My Favorites? Click on the My Favorites tab to see when
books are in your My Favorites list. To remove a book, click on the
Remove button.
